Resolve to Be Creative in 2016!

With the New Year here, many people are still mulling over what they want to change in 2016. Lots of folks want to get in shape, get out of debt, find a new job or spend more time with their families. All of those are wonderful goals, but I’d like to challenge you all to a different kind of resolution. I want you to resolve to do more creative things in 2016!

Before you say, “I don’t have a creative bone in my body,” just hear me out.

Having a creative outlet can actually benefit your health! We live in such a stressful society, filled with traffic, work deadlines and pressure coming at us from all directions! Allowing yourself a creative outlet gives you some time away from all the mental energy spent on everyday stressors. Less stress can help improve your overall health and quality of life. Give yourself permission to set aside some “you time” and pick up a creative hobby that you enjoy.

Unless you do something creative for a living, you’re probably exercising primarily the left side of your brain — the side that controls logic, math and language. When you start to exercise creativity through any kind of arts, you start to give the right side of your brain a workout. So when you exercise creativity, you are literally exercising a different part of your brain!

Doing something creative can also help you become a well-rounded individual. The key with just about everything in life is achieving balance. Exercising creativity can help balance out the rest of your obligations in life.

So now that you know why you should be creative, how do you decide what to do this year? You need to get creative about getting creative! There are so many options. I am obviously partial to sewing, embroidery and quilting, but there’s a whole world of options out there that will exercise your right brain, give you some stress relief and help you be a happier and more well-balanced human!

You could try taking musical instrument or voice lessons. Maybe you’ve always wanted to learn how to salsa dance. Perhaps you’d like paint. Maybe you’d like to try your hand at some sort of artisan craft like glass blowing. There are classes and instruction out there for just about anything your heart desires. Keep an open mind and try new things. You just never know what you will love unless you try a little bit of everything. So I encourage you in 2016 to get out there, try something new and add a little beauty to the world with the creative endeavor of your choice!

(Oh, and if you ever want to talk about embroidery, sewing or quilting, I’m your lady!)
